KotOR è il primo gioco di ruolo ambientato nell'universo di Guerre Stellari. Il gioco permette al giocatore di essere sia buono (lato chiaro) che cattivo (lato oscuro) usando un sistema di allineamento che registra le azioni, dalla semplice scelta delle parole a scelte importanti per la trama, basato su quale dei due percorsi il giocatore sta seguendo.
Il sistema del gioco è basato sul sistema sviluppato da Wizards of the Coast chiamato Star Wars Roleplaying Game, il quale è basato a sua volta sul sistema d20 derivato dalla terza edizione delle regole di Dungeons & Dragons. Knights of the Old Republic introduce il giocatore nell'universo di Guerre Stellari, in un periodo stabilito attorno al 3.956 BBY, circa 4.000 anni prima degli eventi accaduti nel film Una nuova speranza. La storia inizia su una nave della Repubblica, la Endar Spire, che cade in un'imboscata dei Sith fighter in orbita attorno al pianeta Taris. Sfuggendo alla distruzione della nave, il giocatore e Carth Onasi atterrano sul pianeta a bordo di un guscio di salvataggio. La loro prima priorità è di trovare Bastila Shan, una giovane Jedi che stava accompagnando i due sulla Endar Spire e che conosce il raro potere della Forza della Meditazione da battaglia. Un anno prima Bastila aveva usato questo potere per assalire la nave del Signore Oscuro dei Sith Darth Revan; nella confusione l'apprendista di Revan, Darth Malak, attaccò la nave di Revan e uccidendolo prese il suo posto come capo supremo dei Sith. Bastila Shan

Il personaggio del giocatore è un maschio/femmina (in base alla scelta del giocatore), che fugge dalla Endar Spire con il compagno Carth Onasi. La loro scialuppa si schianta nella città superiore di Taris dove iniziano la ricerca di Bastila. Il salvataggio di Bastila permette loro di lasciare il pianeta momenti prima che venga distrutto dalla flotta Sith. I compagni giungono su Dantooine dove il giocatore impara a conoscere la Forza e diventa uno Jedi. Il Consiglio Jedi dà ai compagni una missione che implica la ricerca di alcune mappe stellari che serviranno a trovare le coordinate esatte di una arma potente chiamata Star Forge, che permette di produrre una quantità infinita di navi spaziali. Nel mezzo della missione, un confronto faccia a faccia tra Malak e il giocatore rivela che il giocatore stesso è in realtà Revan, il vecchio Signore Oscuro, che aveva perso la memoria dopo il tradimento del suo allievo. Durante questo imprevista Bastila viene catturata e convertita al Lato Oscuro.


Carth Onasi

Dopo aver trovato tutti gli indizi, il giocatore viaggia verso il mondo sconosciuto di Rakata Prime dove la Ebon Hawk si schianta. Il giocatore incontra difficoltà nelle relazione con la popolazione nativa, ma al termine riesce a raggiungere il tempio sacro, dove Bastila è in attesa a sua insaputa. Sul tempio si deve compiere una scelta che riguarda se rimanere con i propri compagni (percorso del Lato Chiaro), per distruggere la Star Forge e sconfiggere la minaccia dei Sith, oppure unirsi a Bastila (percorso del Lato Oscuro), e prendere il posto di Darth Malak come Signore Oscuro. Nel canone di Guerre Stellari riguardante l'universo espanso, la LucasArts ha stabilito che la storia segue il percorso del Lato Chiaro. Quale che sia la scelta del giocatore, Revan abbandona la Galassia per dirigersi verso le Regioni Ignote, con lo scopo di distruggere l'impero dei veri Sith.

tar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) is a role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. It was released for the Xbox on July 15, 2003, for Microsoft Windows on November 19, 2003, and on September 7, 2004 for Mac OS X. The Xbox version is playable on Xbox 360 with its Backward Compatibility feature.The PC version was re-released as part of the Star Wars: The Best of PC collection in 2006 as a limited release. The sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords, was developed by Obsidian Entertainment at BioWare's suggestion as BioWare wanted to focus on their own intellectual properties. Jeremy Soule wrote the soundtrack score for the game.

The Story

The story of this game takes place 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith and Darth Revan's former apprentice, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Republic. Malak's aggression has left the Jedi scattered and vulnerable; many Jedi Knights have fallen in battle and others have sworn allegiance to Malak and Revan.
The game opens with the player's character—the player can choose a face and be male or female (canonically a male)—awakening aboard a Republic ship under attack by Malak's forces. The player's character gradually gathers companions and pieces together his or her past while attempting to stop Malak. While taking refuge at the Jedi Academy on Dantooine, the player's character learns to be a Jedi, discovers a "Star Map", and learns of the "Star Forge", the probable source of Malak's military resources.


Bastila Shan

The player's character and his or her companions search planets across the galaxy—Dantooine, Manaan, Tatooine, Kashyyyk, and Korriban—for more information about the Star Forge. Through the course of his or her travels, the player will eventually discover the character's true identity - the brainwashed Darth Revan, whom the Jedi Council on Dantooine took in and subjected to memory modification so that he would no longer be a threat to the galaxy. Darth Revan had been injured when attacking a republic planet because Darth Malak turned his guns on his former master. Because Bastila Shan was aboard Revan's ship with a Jedi strike force, she was able to heal him and bring him to the Jedi Council on Dantooine. Her actions lead to the force bond between her and Revan, which plays a role later in the game.


Carth Onasi

Depending on the character's alignment, upon ultimately reaching the Star Forge he or she either defeats the Sith (the light-side path) or usurps control from Malak (the dark-side path). A light-aligned character is hailed as a savior and hero; a dark-side character stands before the remaining Sith forces as the new Dark Lord of the Sith.
