TRAMA


1929, in una città americana dell'Est: un potente e corrotto pezzo da 90 si scontra, a causa di una donna, con il suo amico e consigliere, mentre è in corso una lotta acerrima con un boss della malavita italoamericana. Film violento ma raffreddato, con risvolti di grottesco umorismo, dove l'intreccio tra politica, affari e criminalità organizzata è un dato di fatto quasi scontato, organico e non patologico. Non c'è un solo personaggio positivo, e ciascuno ha il suo lato debole. Il crocevia di Miller nel titolo rimanda al bosco che è il luogo della messa a morte, ma anche al fascino tortuoso di una messa in scena dove tutto – dalla fotografia di Barry Sonnenfeld, futuro regista, alle musiche irlandesi di Carter Burwell – concorre a un esito di alta coerenza stilistica. Se non il migliore, è il più armonioso e compatto dei fratelli Joel e Ethan Coen. Apparizione di Sam Raimi – abbattuto a colpi di mitra – e comparsa non accreditata – una segretaria – di Frances McDormand, futuro Oscar per Fargo.




RECENSIONE

Elegante e barocco gangsterfilm impreziosito da una galleria di personaggi secondari che rilegge il bestiario del genere con fantasia grottesca e sorprendente. Il pendolarismo del protagonista tra gang e fronti rivali della criminalità è la quintessenza narrativa dell'hardboiled, il cappello che compare e scompare è quasi una citazione dalla Chiave di Vetro di Hammett: esemplare nell'erudizione cinematografica e letteraria, il cinema dei fratelli Coen, fatto di dialoghi brillanti e ricercati, cura maniacale per la ripetizione di piccoli dettagli decisivi, svolte e colpi di scena inesauribili, raggiunge, con questo film, una rarefazione suggestiva.
Come loro, il protagonista guida la regia di scontri, tradimenti e alleanze, con humor e decadente nostalgia. Ma almeno in un paio di sequenze (soprattutto quella dell'agguato notturno a Finney) tirano fuori un cinema da puro applauso.
