Will, un ricco trentenne irresponsabile, si inventa un figlio immaginario per abbordare le donne. Poi fa amicizia con Marcus, dodicenne, con problemi scolastici. Gradualmente i due diventano amici....




RECENSIONE

Will (Hugh Grant - Il diario di Bridget Jones), è uno scapolo solo, senza figli, ricco, che passa le sue giornate alla ricerca di donne. Fingendo di essere un padre single, comincia a frequentare le riunioni di un centro sociale, dove tutti i genitori single cercano di aiutarsi a vicenda: il suo scopo, però, è quello di trovare nuove "prede". Il suo piano tuttavia, deve fare i conti con un imprevisto, Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), dodicenne, figlio di una signora per nulla attraente, hippy e costantemente depressa. Il rapporto con il ragazzo inizia quasi per caso, ma ben presto Will, cinico, pieno di sé e fermamente convinto a restare per tutta la vita "un'isola", ne resta coinvolto. Marcus va a casa di Will ogni giorno, dopo la scuola e poco a poco fra i due si instaura un rapporto di amicizia: il ragazzino riuscirà ad affrontare i compagni di scuola che lo deridono per il suo modo di vestire e di pettinarsi, Will riuscirà ad affrontare e superare le sue paure.
Con queste premesse, il film potrebbe sembrare poco interessante, invece non è così. About a Boy è una commedia ricca di scene esilaranti, toccanti, simpatiche, drammatiche, insomma c'è un miscuglio di emozioni che rendono tutta la storia vera e piacevole. Hugh Grant è in forma smagliante, ritorna ad essere la simpatica canaglia che avevamo conosciuto in "Quattro matrimoni e un funerale". È affascinante, spigliato, e con un nuovo taglio di capelli che gli danno finalmente quell'aria da uomo vissuto che sinceramente gli mancava. Interpreta un trentottenne che ha terrore di ogni impegno, che è privo di ambizioni, che non analizza assolutamente le situazioni che gli capitano. Will è un egoista, vive frequentando caffè e ristoranti alla moda, guardando quitz televisivi, non lavora, ma si mantiene grazie alla rendita dei diritti d'autore di una stupida canzoncina natalizia, che lui odia, scritta da suo padre molti anni prima.
Nicholas Hoult è formidabile, perfettamente calato nella parte della piccola peste che però riesce a risolvere tutto con un sorriso. Marcus è un ragazzino che abita da solo con una mamma molto particolare, che lo costringe a vestirsi stile anni '70 e che gli taglia i capelli come Nicolas de "La famiglia Bradford". È però molto sensibile e dotato di una straordinaria capacità di adattamento e di autocritica.
Il film è tratto dal romanzo "Un ragazzo", di Nick Hornby ed è, come lo stesso romanzo, una pellicola leggera, divertente, che scorre talmente veloce da non rendersi conto del tempo che passa. Come giustamente afferma il regista Paul Weitz, la forza del film sta nella straordinaria combinazione di ironia e situazioni emozionanti. Infatti nonostante affronti temi delicati come l'isolamento, la famiglia, i rapporti affettivi, About a boy è un film molto divertente.  (Teresa Lavanga)
