La saga di Dragon Ball, ormai arcinota anche in occidente e in Italia, ha segnato un punto di svolta importante per gli anime giapponesi, la cui diffusione, già buona soprattutto in patria, ha raggiunto picchi incredibili dopo la pubblicazione della serie a fumetti dedicata a Goku e company. Da fan della prima ora, dopo anni e anni di repliche al limite della decenza da parte delle televisioni nostrane e riduzioni videoludiche raramente soddisfacenti, ci accostiamo con una buona dose di sano scetticismo all'ultima fatica targata Bandai, questo Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team, ennesimo picchiaduro ispirato alla serie disegnata da Akira Toriyama sul finire degli anni '80. Vediamo se questa cautela si è rivelata inopportuna o salvifica.

Tutto la storia, un'altra volta
Già alla sua prima narrazione, la storia dietro gli eventi della serie Z di Dragon Ball risultò pretestuosa e abbastanza scontata, laddove i veri punti di forza del fumetto prima, e della serie animata poi, erano invece da ricercare nella caratterizzazione dei personaggi e nelle stupefacenti tecniche di lotta da questi impiegate nel corso degli immancabili scontri, troppo spesso preceduti e seguiti da una quantità spropositata di dialoghi ridondanti. Certo, appare facile parlare a oltre vent'anni di distanza, considerando anche il target medio basso (come età) cui la serie era rivolta: ci troveremo quindi a ripercorrere esattamente le stesse gesta cui abbiamo già assistito nella versione cartacea prima e televisiva poi, con l'arrivo sulla terra di Radish, un Saiyan mandato a fare un sopralluogo per accertarsi di quale fine fosse toccata in sorte al bebè spedito anni prima sul pianeta Terra per annientare la razza umana. Inutile dire che quel bebè altri non è che l'ignaro Goku, che ha preferito impiegare i suoi anni a contatto con il genere umano per trovarsi una moglie (Chichi), procreare (Gohan) e rimpinzarsi di quanto di meglio la cucina terrestre potesse offrigli. L'arrivo del combattivo Saiyan sconvolge il normale flusso della quotidianità familiare del nostro che, non credendo alle sue parole, dapprima lo ignora e poi si trova costretto ad affrontarlo in duello per liberare Gohan, da lui rapito. Da qui in poi, la storia ripercorre pedissequamente tutti gli avvenimenti della linea temporale originale, dal conseguente arrivo di Nappa e Vegeta alla battaglia finale con Majin Bu, passando per gli scontri all'ultimo sangue contro Freezer e Cell, con annessi dialoghi inutili e spettacolari scene di combattimento. Non che proporre una storia che ha appassionato milioni di fan di tutto il globo sia del tutto sbagliato, eppure non avrebbe guastato provare a percorrere strade un tantino diverse, impiegando personaggi amatissimi in contesti del tutto nuovi, offrendo così qualcosa di inedito.

Commento Finale
Tra il rischio di un'innovazione impopolare e la certezza di propinare una minestra riscaldata, Namco Bandai ha optato, come purtroppo molte altre software house stanno facendo negli ultimi anni, per la seconda opzione, facendo arrivare sugli scaffali un gioco discreto, esente da grandi pecche e che soddisferà la fame di Dragon Ball di quanti ancora non ne hanno lo stomaco pieno. Ma se cercate un titolo entusiasmante, con un filo narrativo interessante e un tentativo di battere strade nuove nell'ambito dei picchiaduro tridimensionali, allora fareste bene a spendere diversamente i fondi che l'avvicinarsi della stagione natalizia potrebbe portarvi in dote. La situazione migliora solo se a condividere la vostra passione per il manga di Goku ci sono altri tre amici, contro i quali sfidarvi all'ultimo sangue in battaglie che guadagnano, allora sì, di adrenalina e imprevedibilità.

You know what they say: Another year, another new fighting game set in the Dragon Ball Z universe. Unfortunately, there's very little about Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team that's actually new. The introduction of team battles may appeal to those who can round up some friends to play with, but it isn't enough to keep this familiar fighting system from feeling stale, and the story mode recycles the same tired material that's been used for game after game in the series. Avid Dragon Ball Z fans who are eager to take Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the gang on the go may appreciate the fact that this is the first entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series to come to the PSP, but most others won't find much to get excited about here. As in prior Budokai Tenkaichi games, Tenkaichi Tag Team's battles give you a behind-the-back perspective on your fighter and let you dash and soar in all directions around a three-dimensional arena, which is liberating. An automatic lock-on feature makes navigation easy; you press up or down on the thumbstick to fly straight toward or away from your currently targeted enemy, and you can circle around him or her by pressing left or right. Flying up or down independent of your target's position is done with the D pad. The warriors of Dragon Ball Z routinely hit their opponents with enough force to send them soaring back hundreds of feet, and wielding that kind of power is intoxicating for a little while. But the shallowness and repetition of the combat soon becomes clear, and the initial excitement wears off quickly. At first glance, you might think there's a good amount of depth to the fighting system. The training section you can access from the main menu has dozens of entries about full-power smashes, vanishing attacks, ultimate supers, chain burst mode, and all sorts of other things. Unfortunately, all you get in this section are little blurbs of text about each item. Without the opportunity to see these things in action to get some context for what they mean, it's difficult to make sense of statements like, "When you receive a Rush immediately after entering a Discernment stance, you will automatically counter with a Snap Instant Transport Attack and a Body Strike thereafter." A hands-on tutorial mode that guided you through these actions step-by-step would have made it all seem a lot less mystifying.

Closing Comments
Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team is just another DBZ fighting game, and makes little effort to distinguish itself from its predecessors. Team-based multiplayer combat is a good addition, but it's tacked on to the same old combat model the series has dished out time and time again, and there are many far better multiplayer fighting games on the PSP. Tenkaichi Tag Team hints at depth and variety but actually fails to offer much of either, and although it's fun to wield the tremendous power of these characters for a short while, the repetitive and familiar nature of the combat makes this a game for only the most devoted Dragon Ball fans.
